Chair Tuesday: Standard Chair

This week's Chair Tuesday is especially for Matthew who showed it to me as a chair he'd like to have in his house one day. The Jean Prouvé Standard Chair is a design classic, but personally I don't really like it.

I can understand where it came from -- Prouvé's desire to make a structurally sound chair that focused on the integrity of the materials and well thought out engineering.  His idea was that as the chair takes most of the strain on the rear legs, they should be superbly strong and the front legs need only be lightweight.

I think this creates a vastly unbalanced and disproportioned chair, but it is an undeniably strong and long lasting chair, with many originals still kicking around.  They also come in many colours which is nice, but it just doesn't do it for me.  Just too asymmetrical for my eyes, but to each his own.
